Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Captain Jose Maldonado Machuca

Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans and their influence on the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. During this important observation, we are pleased to spotlight our team members who show how our different backgrounds contribute to The PSA Way.

PHL-based Captain Jose Maldonado Machuca’s interest in aviation began when he was a kid watching his favorite uncle be a fighter pilot for the Venezuelan Air Force. It was because of him that Jose was able to attend air shows and even had the opportunity to sit on an F-16 fighter many times as a kid. Years later, Jose pursued his dream and passion of a career as a pilot once established in the United States.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Jose talked with us about his flying journey, his experience at PSA, and what he cherishes most about his Venezuelan culture.

What attracted you to PSA?

The career growth opportunities and the chance to advance on my pilot career through the flow program to American Airlines. Also, the benefits, competitive compensation, and work/life balance. Our fleet, company culture, and work bases were also attractive points that made me decide PSA was the place for me.

As a Hispanic pilot, how do you feel you impact PSA’s culture of diversity and inclusion?

As a Hispanic pilot, I believe I have the opportunity to bring a unique perspective and contribute to creating a more inclusive environment where individuals from different backgrounds feel valued and represented in PSA. I have the great opportunity to express, exchange, and share my background and diversity with coworkers.

In the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month, what cultural traditions and customs do you cherish the most?

I definitely must say the food. Venezuelan food is known for its delicious flavors and unique dishes. Arepas, cachapas, pabellón criollo among others. Venezuelan music is vibrant and rhythmic within the mix of Salsa and Merengue, offering a tropical beat that is fresh, catchy, and energetic. Warm and welcoming nature – we are known for our hospitality and friendliness. The breathtaking Angel Falls, the world’s highest waterfall, and the beautiful beaches of the Caribbean coast. Venezuela coffee culture: Venezuela is also known for its high-quality coffee beans. A good “Cafe con Leche” every morning is a must for a good start of the day.
